Teaching philosophy
As an art educator and artist, I deeply value the arts and believe that providing students the freedom to express and grow as individuals through exploration of art is important. Art education provides students the ability to use their problem solve, express themselves, and make crucial connections to those around them through meaningful class discussions.
The art room is a place for students to develop empathy and social skills by encouraging them to visualize and speak about their interests and feelings through art. I believe that providing this safe, caring space for students is key to making dynamic learning experiences, building community bonds, and providing a positive environment to create. Students will also gain useful skills through the variety of materials provided in the classroom. Exploring new tools and techniques will enable their natural curiosity and problem solving skills.
My role as an art educator is to nurture and encourage the lifelong learning of my students by providing all of the necessary life skills that comes with teaching art. I strive to be a positive role model for all my students. I look forward to teaching students how to communicate their ideas visually. I want to help them make connections between their artwork and the world around them. Most importantly, I want to create an engaging classroom where students can be themselves and enjoy making art.
Diversity Statement
As a white, hetrogendered woman I haven’t faced many adversities as others have in life. I have witnessed my peers face challenges, that I could only experience through what they told me. I felt their pain and hardship they endured. I vowed to treat everyone with respect, to stand up for those who’ve faced inequality, and to further my knowledge about diversity. I have broadened my perspective and understanding of the world through my studies and research on diversity, equality vs. equity, and cultural appropriation vs appreciation.
My role as an art educator is to provide a safe, equitable and respectful environment for all no matter their background, race, gender or ability. I strive to develop strong student-teacher relationships that foster trust and respect. I am dedicated to supporting the development of an inclusive school culture. I look forward to contributing to these efforts through advising clubs and organizations that educate students about diversity, equity and inclusion.
